Christmas with Paula Deen: Recipes and Stories from My Favorite Holiday (Hardcover)
From Publishers Weekly
Christmas, that time of good cheer and lapsed diets, is the perfect holiday to showcase the cooking of Food Network star Deen (Paula Deen Celebrates!), who specializes in the kind of butter-and cheese-laden fare that epitomizes family-style comfort food. Sweets and snacks account for most of the recipes, since Deen happily admits to never varying from her Christmas dinner menu, which centers on a Standing Rib Roast and features a trio of potato dishes, including some unbelievably decadent Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes. Cooks will find the cookies and desserts familiar but richer, like eyebrow-raising but delicious Chocolate Cheese Fudge and creamy Chocolate Sandwich Cookies. Snacks and breakfast dishes are crowd pleasers, like gooey Praline French Toast Casserole and Cheese-coated Bacon Wraps. Devoted viewers of Deen’s show may miss the sound of her warm drawl narrating the process, but the smattering of glowing family photos and anecdotes about her grown kids and recent marriage, though she’s told them before, are decent stand-ins. Several pages of baking hints are included, but most of the recipes are simple and straightforward enough, with readily available ingredients, that even novices should be able to put together a generous Christmas spread. Christmas Cookies Are for Giving: Recipes, Stories and Tips for Making Heartwarming Gifts (Hardcover)
Review
…captures the joy of doing your own cookie making…a great guide for discovering the secrets of great baking. — Westchester World
Pure magic…it will make…your family happy and your Christmas gifts sing songs of good will. — Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of This is the Place
Product Description
More than a cookbook, Christmas Cookies Are for Giving is a celebration of family, friends and the joy of giving. Stories, recipes, tips and more…
Smells of cinnamon…cookie cutters…rolling and baking…eating dough…warm times with friends and family…Christmas cookies are a universal symbol of sweetness and family tradition at Christmas. But the joy of Christmas cookies goes beyond eating. In Christmas Cookies Are for Giving, Kristin Johnson and Mimi Cummins reawaken the fun of giving Christmas cookies, as they remember doing when they lived next door to each other when young children.
From the original short story “The Giving Christmas Cookie,” which shows a family brought together by a special cookie recipe at Christmas, to nearly 50 scrumptious recipes with mouth watering photos, to the timely, easy directions for making homemade “Gifts in a Jar,” Christmas Cookies Are for Giving shows that old-fashioned Christmas gifts are an antidote to cynicism about Christmas. The secret to celebrating your family and friends may not be in the mall, but in your pantry where you?ll find the ingredients to make Butterball Santas, Cranberry Decadent Cookies, and Vanillekipferl? The Giving Christmas Cookie.
Give this book as a present, and you may be rewarded when someone you love bakes the goodies in this book for you.

-WHY DIDN’T SOMEONE DO THIS BEFORE?-
-Storybook Advent Calendar makes me think -Why didn’t someone do this before?- It’s uplifting, educational, and celebratory for adults and children. I especially like the entry for December 7, which explains the similarities and differences of Christianity, Judaism and Islam in a simple, profound and beautiful way.-
Tina B. Tessina, PhD, psychotherapist and author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting about the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage (Adams Media 2008).
-I AM AWESTRUCK-
“I am awestruck with the book’s warmth, its caring and loving sentiment, and totally enamored with the artwork!”
Jeri Friedman, Los Lunas, New Mexico
-THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ME BACK TO CHRISTMAS-
-The Storybook Advent Calendar reminds adults and teaches children the roots of the holiday. Stories flow with a wonderful mix of new and old. From classics like The Matchstick Girl to timeless treasures such as The Three Trees, this collection will promote important conversations between parents and children, including the addition of an original story teaching how the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths relate to each other and have more in common than not.
Thank you for bringing me back to Christmas. It is possible to back away from the commercial tidal wave and rest in the peace that is the true meaning of the gift we have been given.”
Aly Williams, Elementary School Teacher, Spokane, Washington, USA
