Calendars have long been traditional Christmas gifts to hand over at the festive season as we wind down from one year and start making plans to celebrate the onset of the new one. The arrival of the Advent Calendar in the nineteenth century marked the beginning of a new tradition of counting down the days until Christmas. And is now perhaps the only time of year when parents will allow their children to ‘open the little windows’ and eat a chocolate before breakfast. But Advent calendars are only really fun for one month in the year, which is perhaps why we turn to those more ‘popular’ calendars for the rest of the time.
You only need to walk around the high street in the run up to Christmas. Which is roughly around July these days, to see which popstars and footballers are glamorously poised for the camera in the vain hope that we might buy them as Christmas gifts, take them home with us and worship them for the next twelve months. These commercial calendars cover almost every sport and celebrity going, even those loyal Cliff-’Mistletoe and Wine’-Richard fans will never be disappointed. And what’s wrong with that?
Well…it’s just not very Christmassy is it? Surely we can do better when Christmas gift shopping?
Perhaps you’ve often wondered what it might feel like to be observed in such a manner, or perhaps your partner has always dreamed of being famous enough for someone to want to buy a calendar of them? Well, making this happen is probably not quite as bizarre as you might think – Santa really does make dreams come true.
