Joe Paprocki, national consultant for faith formation at Loyola Press and author of several books, wants faith-formation leaders in Catholic parishes, as well as religion teachers in Catholic schools, to use the weekly Sunday Scripture readings as a springboard from which to create new and exciting Advent activities for children and adults.
With this in mind, Paprocki will lead an Advent Webinar offering DREs, catechists, religion teachers, and RCIA leaders unique Advent activities drawn from the Sunday Scripture readings of Cycle C (the Gospel of Luke). The free Webinar, which takes place November 18, 2009, from 7:15—8:15 p.m. CST, will help attendees think beyond the usual activities of creating Advent wreaths and the like and focus instead on some brand-new options that take to heart the Cycle C Scripture readings for Advent.
“Advent wreaths, calendars, and Jesse Trees are all part of the Advent experience, but I want adults and children alike to go deeper than that and to look to the Sunday Scripture readings to guide them in their observance of Advent,” says Paprocki. He also sees this Webinar as a chance to remind faith-formation leaders that Advent is a special season unto itself, not just a stepping-stone on the way to Christmas. Paprocki hopes that with this mindset, leaders will find it easier to convey the joy of Advent through the new activities they will take away from this Webinar.
Paprocki has much to draw on as he prepares for this Webinar: he has over 30 years of experience in ministry and currently serves as an eighth-grade catechist. He is also the author of the bestseller The Catechist’s Toolbox, as well as A Well-Built Faith and The Bible Blueprint. Why not try a Lego advent calendar this year? The advent calendar is always special as it counts down to Christmas and has children the world over trying not to get too fired up while the big day gets near. Although it isn’t a new tradition, modern day calendars bear little resemblance to those people available in the 19th Century. The practice appears to have begun in Germany. The old version normally involved somebody using a piece of chalk to write on a board and opening windows with hidden sweets was unheard of.
The exercise faded out during the war more than likely as a result of a scarcity of paper rather than lack of celebration. It improved in the post war era and the same principles apply with the current version. Commencing with the first of December, you open a window every single day until you come to December the 24th. There are many different types of calendar starting from basic ones where you only open a window to show you a date, to those containing candies to permanent structures specially designed for use year after year.
The Lego advent calendar creates a new perspective on an old tradition. The children will get huge enjoyment value from creating the calendar and finding the hidden items behind each day. There are various sets all based on a particular Lego theme. For example the Lego City advent calendar is amazingly popular. The theory is to construct something small every day in the run up to Christmas additionally, the Lego can be used over and over.
The Lego items are compatible with some other sets so may be used all year but the majority of children will likely realize that they lose odd bits and pieces. So it might be best to put it away ready for next year once Christmas day comes. Your children will almost certainly be swept up with new toys and gifts. They may even have been given new Lego sets as presents.
