Advent Season 2010 – Are You Preparing Him Room?

Have you heard of Advent?  It is the season right before Christmas when, as Christians, we can prepare our hearts to celebrate the coming of Christ.  Because the date of Christmas changes according to the calendar, so does Advent.  This year the Advent 2010 season begins on November 28, 2010, the first Sunday of Advent.

If you are like me, you might feel woefully inadequate for this task of preparing yourself or your family for Christmas.  I was not raised in a home that took Christmas preparation very seriously, in fact quite the opposite.

I, like many of you, was raised in a non-Christian home. And when I became a Christian as a teenager, I attended a church that knew nothing of Christmas preparation or Advent or anything of the kind.  Sure, they would decorate the church with wreaths and red bows, and even allow the children to come down the processional with the poinsettias, but they knew nothing of the magnitude of the event.

So Christmas was not held up with wonder, awe, or reverence.  Sadly, it was a time for me to be on my guard, to be watchful because it meant spending extended times with my non-Christian family. I even remember asking my Christian friends to pray for me.  I would say, “I am going home, so pray that I do not stumble and that I do not fall into all the old habits.”

Thankfully, I married into a family that knew how to prepare itself for Christmas.  And with my own spouse and children, I learned the priority of getting my heart ready to celebrate the birth of our Savior.  These most recent years have been filled up with joy, wonder, amazement, and pondering how one so small could accomplish something so large.  Truly, it is amazing!

As the Advent season has come upon us, I want to persuade you to begin preparing.  I want you to take your preparation for Christmas seriously.  Begin now to gather the things you need to direct your family’s hearts toward heaven. Let this season of Advent fill your home and your life.

Throughout much of agriculture, a remarkable span of 10,000 years, farmers were largely the stewards of the land and the crops that they grew. As an organic seed breeder explains in this segment, the role of the farmer at the center of agriculture began to change with the advent of hybrid seed development beginning with corn in the 1930′s. Celebrating Advent With Nativity Scenes

Edit Article |

Posted: Sep 27, 2007 |Comments: 0

]]>

Nativity scenes are very popular additions to any household in the advent season. They depict the birth of Jesus. Christian nativity scenes normally show Jesus in a manger, Joseph and Mary in a barn, stable, or shed. A mule and an ox usually accompany them. The scene also includes the three wise men, shepherds, angels and the Star of Bethlehem. The traditional scenes that show the shepherds and three wise men together are not true to the story as told in the bible. In the bible the three wise men arrived after the birth of Jesus.

Nativity scenes are displayed in homes, churches and village greens throughout the advent season. Large nativity scenes with live animals and people are created for advent nativity celebrations. Nativity scenes are called creche’s in European countries.

St. Francis of Assisi is credited with making the nativity tradition popular. In a Christmas Eve service in 1223, he staged a simple reenactment of Jesus’ birth, focusing on the manger. He made the nativity come alive. The idea caught on and manger scenes became more elaborate and took on more cultural characteristics from Italy to France, Germany and Spain. Today, almost every culture in the world has their unique representation of the nativity scene.

A typical French Noel crèche consists of figures called Santons. These figures originally made of wood, wax or clay come in their work clothes to visit the Holy Family. They bring the Christ Child presents they have made or grown, hunted or sold. They perform or offer simple gestures of thoughtfulness. They were a way of bringing religion home after the French Revolution. Churches were being sacked and closed. Christmas midnight mass and outdoor nativity scenes were banned. This forced people to set up crèches in their own homes. The displays became more elaborate over time with the whole Provencal village being recreated. Typical characters of day-to-day life: the fishmonger, baker, flower peddler, vegetable merchant, the mayor, priest, nun, midwife with her cradle, the fisherman with his nets and the shepherd with his cape and walking cane are depicted. The scenery is often developed to include trees, rivers, hills, the entire whole village scene with the focal point being the nativity crèche.

Advent festivities in Italy include bagpipers or zampognari who play old hill tunes in anticipation of the coming of Jesus. These bagpipers are popular in Italian nativity scenes. The Italians traditionally view the many elaborate manger scenes on Christmas Eve. Artisans create detailed landscapes around the manger scenes: small trees, lakes, rivers, grottoes, hanging angels and local heroes. The most elaborate and beautiful nativity scenes are set up in Churches.

Nativity scenes are common in Christian homes today, often displayed on mantles or underneath the Christmas tree. Advent wreaths, advent calendars and Christmas wreaths are also popular for advent celebrations.

Celebrating Advent

]]>

Many families are trying to bring real meaning back into their Christmas holiday.  There is so much commercialism today that moms and dads are struggling to grow meaning and appreciation in the hearts of their children regarding Christmas.

Celebrating Advent is a fabulous way to incorporate a tradition based on the real meaning of Christmas along with encouraging excitement, joy and anticipation in your children.

Advent means “coming” or “arrival of something extremely important.”  So it is a way to celebrate and get ready for Christmas day by remembering Christ’s birth.

There are many different ideas and ways to celebrate the Advent Season.  It all begins four Sundays before Christmas day and ends on Christmas Eve.

*Make an Advent Wreath – The green wreath is a circle symbolizing life and the candles represents each Sunday until Christmas.  Three of the candles should be purple meaning royalty and penitence.  One candle will be rose meaning celebration.  In the middle of these four candles is a white candle that is saved and lit on Christmas Day.  You can pray each week when you light the candles and read from the Bible.

*A Crèche – My sisters does a version of this by having a nativity scene that “travels” every day of Advent to the stable.  Her boys get so enthusiastic about looking around the house to see where Mary and Joseph are as they draw closer to the Nativity Stable.  On Christmas Day they place Jesus in the manger and the scene is complete.

*An Advent Prayer Chain or Scripture Chain – Use construction paper and either write prayer requests or Scripture verses on each piece of the chain.  Go through each one together as a family until Christmas.

*Have a Family Blessings Jar – Each person in the family writes something they are thankful for every day during Advent.  On Christmas Day you can gather as a family and empty out the jar reading them all together as a family and thanking Jesus for your blessings.

*An Advent Calendar – This can be the kind that has chocolate behind the doors or as mine does, a tiny Nativity ornament. Each day I have my children take turns opening the tiny door and discovering what is behind it as they hang it on the hooks above and slowly make the Nativity scene complete.  There is a corresponding Bible Verse we read each day also.

Don’t forget that there are other fun Advent activities you can do during this time like making Advent cookies, giving gifts to the needy, or having a “Jesse Tree” where one ornament is hung each day during Advent.

Whether your family chooses to use one or all of these ideas, I pray that this simple but meaningful tradition will become a special time together as a family in your home as you “Count – Down” to Christmas.

Christmas Celebrations: Teaching My 3-Year-Old About Christ’s Birthday – MySpecialPlace.com

This Christmas is the first Christmas my 3 year old, Brianna will remember. We are trying to teach her what Christmas is all about, the birth of Jesus. She helped us set up the nativity. She even has one in her room. Brianna tells us “Just remember Baby Jesus is not in the crib until December 25th.” We are counting down the days until his birth with our Advent Calendar, with every day she gets a token gift. She thinks this is better than her birthday.

Why We Don’t Teach Children to Forgive

As a parent I have had the experience many times of teaching my son to apologize. The Best Advent Calenders for 2010: Lego Learning Toys

]]>

An Advent calendar is a tradition celebrated in many families as the season of Advent approaches Christmas. There are a number of secular Advent calendars on the market and a few are designed to attract and entertain both kids and adults. In this review we look at the range of Lego Advent Calenders available for 2010 to count down the last 24 days before Christmas.

Lego is one of the world’s biggest toy brands and with good reason. It has been in operation for over 60 years and continues to build durable toys that engage kids of all ages, and more than a few adults as well!

Lego first began making Advent calendars in 1998 with a singular generic set. In 2010 they have a number of more specialised options available. There are two specific releases for this year, The City Advent Calendar (set 2824) and the Kingdoms Advent Calendar (

The City Advent Calendar is priced at .99 and includes a calendar with 24 windows for each day of Advent. Behind each window is a small minifigure or model. Included in this set are 6 minifigures and small micro-models to build including a Christmas tree, fireplace and a number of small micro-toy replicas including a plane, helicopter, fire engine and Santa’s train set.

The Kingdoms Advent Calendar (set 7952) is also .99 but looks to be much better value than the City themed one. It includes nine minifigures and other days are taken up with small micro-sets. The sets and figures include a catapult, a wizard, a dungeon, soldiers and a king and queen with throne as well as weapons and jewels.

Both are great fun and for a family who want to celebrate Advent with a mix of tradition and new fun then the Lego advent calendars will ensure kids take part in the celebrations.

Among the weapons for Indian warfare and hunting were Native American lances. Especially after the introduction of the horse, the lance was pivotal in a raid. Although Native American lances are no longer used for purposes of raids or warfare, the tradition is still carried on by Indian artisans.

Wilton 2010 Porsche customers can count down to luxury with Porsche advent calendar

]]>

Never mind what’s under the tree, your countdown to Christmas will be much more exciting than any present if you’re one of the five Porsche lovers who purchases the limited advent calendar offered by the company this year. Wilton 2010 Porsche buyers may want to check their account balances first, though, as this is not your typical chocolate-filled advent calendar. It retails for million.

With surprises concealed in an aluminum tower rather than a cardboard calendar, recipients will be delighted with gifts from Porsche Design for days 1-24 of December. These aren’t just things like key chains and steering wheel covers either. Weston used Porsche customers would be thrilled to get these trinkets.

Only one “calendar” will be sold per continent, but the aluminum tower could probably replace your Christmas tree. Some of the highlighted gifts tucked inside include a P’6910 Indicator in rose gold, a customizable Porsche Design kitchen P’7320, and a nearly 24-foot yacht designed by the Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See, Austria.

The P’6910 Indicator is the first chronograph to have a mechanical-digital stopwatch display and has one of the most complex movements in the world. The Swiss watchmaker, Eterna, a licensee of Porsche Design, built the movement. It has 800 individual components. Truly impressive and like no watch we’ve every owned, to be sure.

The Porsche Design Kitchen uses wood, glass and aluminum for functional sophistication. It can be customized for the buyer and features cupboards with no handles which open with a light touch as well as multi-functional lights and a high-tech audio/video system.

Wilton 2010 Porsche customers may not find this collection in their price range, but will certainly be impressed with the Motor Yacht RFF28. Combining stability, maneuverability and horsepower, it features a 525 HP Mercury engine and can reach speeds of about 70 mph. Its cockpit is of custom-made teak sole and ergonomically correct, adjustable upholstered bucket seats.

Other windows on the aluminum tower calendar will reveal less impressive gifts like writing tools, cufflinks, Bounce:S2 running shoes, 18-carat gold sunglasses, a leather blouson made of hand-woven lambskin nappa ,and pieces from the French Classic luggage series. Since all the gifts won’t easily fit into the tower, some are depicted on aluminum plates.

Weston used Porsche customers who think they might want to purchase this shiny package should visit the worldwide Porsche Design Store. No word on whether it’s first come, first served or if Porsche has a lottery or auction system in mind for those who want to duke it out for rights to buy this million unique holiday collection.

Maybe next year Porsche will offer 10 calendars and some Swiss chocolate for those of us who do our shopping last-minute.

Personalized Christmas Advent Calendars

Christmas advent calendars are the most popular and fun way to count down the days until Christmas. You anticipate each day wondering what could be lying behind each window. Chocolate advent calendars with chocolates behind every door, for instance is a good way to involve kids in the Christmas countdown. However, one doesn’t have to spend so much just to get an advent calendar. A personalized homemade one is a fun activity which allows you to choose the things that you would like to put behind each door. Furthermore, it is also a fun activity to involve your children and bond with them.

To make your personalized homemade Christmas advent calendar, you will need the following materials:

· Felt tip pens
· paints or colored pencils
· PVA glue
· Scissors
· Plasticine or Blu-Tack
· thin card or stiff paper
· magazines and catalogues
· 2 print out patterns (for the front and back of the calendar) from the Santa’s Postbag website, (please find the link is below)

Prepare the back pattern print-out with 25 squares. Each of these 25 squares corresponds with a door on the front pattern print-out. Select pictures from the magazines and catalogues and cut them out. Glue each picture onto the squares. If the there are part of the pictures that hang outside the squares, leave them as it is. They won’t be seen once the calendar is finished. Set it aside to dry.

If you notice, there are 2 designs made available on the website for the print-out pattern on the front part of the calendar – the Santa Claus and the Reindeer. Choose one and have it printed. Add some color to the design. You can use paint or colored pencils to color the picture. Should you decide to use paint, you will have to set aside it for awhile to dry before you continue.

The front part of the calendar has to be glued to the thin card or stiff paper to give it a sturdy look. Sugar paper is recommended if there is any. Coat the whole sheet of the pattern with a thin layer of PVA glue and glue it to the card or paper. Set aside to dry.

Every door on the front of the calendar needs to be cut. To cut these doors are a bit challenging and younger children may need to be assisted to do it the right way. Carefully, cut 3 sides of each square. The doors may be opened either left or right, or upwards or downwards, depending on your preference.

Place a ball of Plasticine or Blue-Tack on top of the table with your picture placed on top of it where you would want to create a hole. A corner of a square would be advisable. Gently push a pencil through the paper then right into the Blu-Tack or Plasticine. This is will create a hole that will get the scissors into where you will need to cut the door. Slice all 25 doors.

Attach the front part of the calendar to the back part – where the magazines pictures were glued – making sure that the pictures are visible once the doors are opened. Set aside the calendar to dry.

As soon as the calendar is completely dried, you now have your very own homemade personalized Christmas advent calendar. You can then open the first door of your advent calendar of the first day of December, and so on as the days go by, until you Christmas finally comes.

Advent Calendars And Chocolates: A Christmas Specialty

]]>

Dating back during the 19th century, counting the days till Christmas was not made on printed calendar with pretty Santa Claus complete with chocolate, instead tracking the days down was made through the use of a chalk line on the front door or a burning candle to indicate the days until Christmas. It is in this fashion, that a Christmas advent calendar was created.

In 1908, Gerhard Lang printed the first advent calendar at his office in Munich, Germany. Since then, Advent Calendars became a saleable item and were being produced in volumes. By 1950′s chocolate advent calendars were on the shelves of every local store to purchase and as expected became a hit not only for grown-ups but for kids as well.

Presently, advent calendars are still popular when Christmas season comes. There are several collections of advent calendars to choose from, everything from the children’s much loved cartoon characters – like Barbie Dolls and the likes – to the sparkly Santa Clause and the famous Christmas icon – Mr. Snowman. Modern chocolate advent calendar has usually 25 boxes to open – representing each day until the eve of Christmas. Each box contains a single chocolate in various forms. Some contains the shape of Santa Claus, snowflakes, a reindeer, a star, while others were shaped as snowman, which keeps children more interested in the Christmas countdown.

Christmas advent calendars may vary from the most simple to the most elegant, depending on the buyer’s preference. Kids tend to get attracted to the modern advent calendars that are filled with milk chocolate goodies and sweets, while adults lean towards sophistication like Praline, Dark Chocolates, or White Chocolates and can be bought from almost all candy shops and chocolate stores.

Advent calendars are available on display in most shops as early as October. However, because of its high demand, it is advisable that you buy one before December starts, since they tend to sell out really fast. One option though is to purchase it online and have it delivered straight to your door. Some can give you bigger discounts. What’s more, you can choose from a wide array and compare prices without having to hop from one store to another, making you save time, effort, and money.

Christmas advent calendars don’t have to have chocolates in it. There are some that contains a nice note behind every window. A wooden or magnetic one is also available and is a very good alternative to the chocolate one, since it can be reused for the next year.

Another option would be to have a photo of your loved-one enlarged and have it fashioned into an advent calendar, or instead of putting chocolates, you may put a photo of every family member behind every door.

Christmas advent calendar can also be an excellent pre-Christmas present. A homemade one with photos of every family member behind each window would surely be a delight for grandfathers and grandmothers. Seeing their sons, daughters, and grandkids behind every door will surely bring joy and warmth.

The Beginnings Of Advent Calendar

]]>

At the turn of the 19th century in Germany, Protestants count down the days till Christmas by simply making chalk lines on the door or other surfaces. Thus, came the birth of Advent calendars.

It was Gerhard Lang who printed the first advent calendar in Germany in 1908. It was inspired by his mother who made him a simple advent calendar and taught him to count down the days until Christmas. Her mother placed 24 pieces of small candies for which Gerhard would take a piece each day. The very first calendar he made did not have windows instead, it had colored pictures attached to a piece of cardboard representing each day of advent. Afterwards, little doors were added which was opened each day with a religious picture on it or verse or a piece of candy.

At the height of World Ward II, German Advent Calendars were not manufactured because of the strict rationing of cardboard. However, in 1946, Richard Sellmer initiated the manufacturing of advent calendars again in Germany. He had to secure a printing license from the U.S. Military and bought the paper he used in the U.S. Military zone. Advent calendars were handmade back then. In 1950, Advent calendars started selling and became a hit in the United States.

The first advent calendar made by Richard Sellmer was called “The Little Town”. It has pictures of many buildings in the town, which when its windows and doors are opened, one would find pretty things inside representing each day of advent. They also made the very famous lamp shade advent calendar that would fit any lamp and would turn around under heat with 24 windows open. Later on, a Carols Calendar was created with a song for each day of the advent. By 1954, the White House calendar was created with the view of the White House in Washington. After awhile, they produced several kinds of pull out advent calendars.

Presently, the most common type of advent calendar is printed on a cardboard with 24 small doors. These calendars vary in several themes but the most common are the religious ones like Mary and Joseph approaching a stable, nativity scenes, churches, Bethlehem, winter wonderland, and many others. There is also the Santa stocking advent calendar which has a picture of a Christmas tree on it and you hang an ornament on the tree for each day of Advent. A magnetic calendar wherein you can place different figures from the nativity scene each day was also created by Fontanini which can be placed on the refrigerator. For people who are garden fanatics, there is also the garden lovers advent calendar collage with a beautiful painting of a flower in every window.

Teaching our children of the importance of advent and the use of advent calendar is a great way to prepare them for Christmas. It also adds more meaning for families everywhere in the world if we put in a good combination of tradition with the use of advent calendars and advent wreaths.

Thomsonfly.com Launches Advent Calendar to Promote Festive Flight Deals and Offers

(PRWEB) December 10, 2004

This week, Thomsonfly.com launches a festive microsite, developed by Tribal DDB, which will take the shape of an advent calendar. Targeted emails will provide consumers with direct access to the microsite, with a variety of special flight and hotel offers behind each of the calendarÂ?s 24 doors. A Â?teaserÂ? door of the calendar on Thomsonfly.comÂ?s homepage will be updated to correspond to the current date and will offer a new deal each day.

Maria Heckel, marketing director at Thomsonfly.com, comments, Â?We challenge ourselves and our agencies to come up with new creative ways to present offers to our customers. In the run up to Christmas, we thought we would present these offers to consumers in a particularly seasonal way. An advent calendar is an ideal mechanic for this time of year. Also, the calendar door on our homepage is an extremely effective way to make our site more Â?stickyÂ?, as it encourages consumers to visit our site each day to open the new door.Â?

This is the latest digital activity that Tribal has completed for Thomsonfly.com, the UK low-fares airline which is part of TUI, best known in the UK for Thomson Holidays.

Charlotte Blakemore, Account Director at Tribal DDB comments, Â?Creating an effective channel for Thomsonfly.com to continue and maintain a dialogue with their consumers is at the heart of what we do for them. The advent calendar format ensures that Thomsonfly.com deals are presented in a fun and engaging way, enticing consumers to keep in contact with the brand throughout the festive period.Â?

The microsite will be promoted through banners, skyscrapers and popups across a range of sites. In addition, emails directing customers to the advent calendar microsite will be sent out to TUIÂ?s databases.
