Small booklet (roughly 5 x 7 inches) of 47 pages . This is one of a collection of over 70 titles in the traditional fare series published IN ENGLAND by J. Salmon publishing. If you want to create the Dickinsonian, Currier & Ives perfect Christmas, THIS IS IT! There are 11 sepia reproductions of paintings by Charles T. Howard of carriage rides in the snow, and people caroling. There are no photographs or illustrations of the finished recipes. It’s sentimental little book in a VERY charming way. There is no narrative, only a collection of recipes. It’s a bit of authentic, picturesque ‘Jolly Old England’ at Yuletide. Would also make a fabulous gift to tuck into a card, giftbasket or stocking.
Although you don’t need to know metric to use the recipes, it is important to realize that the recipes are from the UK, and there are differences in measurements compared with the US. For example, a pint is 20 ounces in the UK and 16 ounces in the US. A kitchen scale will be essential, as most dry ingredients are given by weight in ounces. A useful website is Cook’s Thesaurus at http://www.foodsubs.com.
There are also a few differences in ingredients. Caster sugar is simply very fine white sugar, and ordinary table sugar works just as well. Mixed spice is roughly the equivalent of pumpkin pie spice. Demerara sugar is very large crystals of sugar sometimes found in the US as a decoration on muffins. It can readily be found in the baking section of the supermarket. Mince refers to ground beef, whereas mincemeat is a spicy fruit combination that doesn’t contain meat.
