Thousands of Christmas trees collected at the curb across the borough are heading back to nature to beautify parks, community gardens and recreational areas on Staten Island.

Indianapolis – City residents still hanging onto their Christmas trees and holiday wreaths have until Saturday, January 27, to drop off all items at designated collection sites for recycling.

A forest load of Christmas trees were picked up by the New York City Sanitation Department for recycling. Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty says 166,638 trees were picked up at curbside this month. The trees were turned into mulch that will used in city parks, and community gardens. The city picked up about 9,500 more trees this year than last.
